Mega Man I

Review

The game, released in 1987, was the first of a long series of hits. It lacks a password system, so any player attempting it will have to do it non-stop. Six bosses and 3 guardians for Dr. Wily's Castle (Rock Man, Mega Clone and Bubble Machines) make for a relativily small game, but it is addicting - especially the Ice Man level. Points are gained, but it has no effect on gameplay; you won't get any extra lives or see any bonus levels. In other words, don't risk your life for them. The game is a definative classic, a worthy addition to any collection! To see a few screen shots, just follow this link.

Tips & Tricks

Legendary Yashichi

Hidden deep within Dr. Wily's castle, is the legendary Yashichi; it powers up all your weapons, and adds a cool 100,000 pts to your score (whee!). Easiest way to get it (and the extra life) is to jump from the drop platform onto the brick overhead and then wait. When the platform retuns from the left again, leap down onto it and then drop onto the yayashi. Hop up to the platform again and drop down to the extra life. Finnaly, jump from the ledge to the platform to the ladder leading up.

Bosses

Cutman
Weapon : Clipper Weapon
Weakness : Fireball
This robot should be the first one tackled; he is vulnerable to the Plasma Cannon, and his pattern of attack is pretty repetitive. The stage is is filled with many stationary robots, so it's a good stage to warm-up in. The blue-bladders should be shot quickly, as they can be pretty persistent should they be able to get close to you.
Bombman
Weapon : Bombs
Weakness : Fireball
Bombman has an endless supply of bombs and agility to boot. He is vulnerable to the Cut Blade, but an experienced player should be able to take him on with the Plasma Gun. Fancy footwork is required to kill him off. The stage is filled with flying fishes, which come at you at regular intervals...be quick to jump!
Gutsman
Weapon : Guts Power
Weakness : Clipper Weapon
This was the hardest stage for me to face; I lost many lives on the deadly flips. If you can't do it, just go to the Elecman Stage and pick up the magnet beam. The stage becomes pretty much straitgh-foward after that, with many Mining Joes and Hardtops along the way. Gutsman is very strong, but also very simple; he'll throw rocks at you, but won't jump up and down the screen. Just throw a couple of bombs to do the trick.
Elecman
Weapon : Elecbeam
Weakness : Clipper Weapon
Elecman's stage is mostly vertical, so be prepared! There are some jump blocks throughout the stage, but nowhere as many an in the Iceman stage. In this stage is hidden the Magnet Beam. To get to it you will need either Gutsman power or the Elec Beam. If you can't do the gutsman stage, you will have to do this stage twice; one to beat Elecman, and one to get the Magnet beam. Elecman is a piece of cake; three cut blades and he's out.
Iceman
Weapon: Ice Slasher
Weakness : Elecbeam
Doesn't anybody think he looks like a lot like Kenny from South Park? This robot's stage is one of the hardest you'll face in this game, especially the disappearing blocks. There is a screen shot of the most difficult one. Jump the block in the following order; #10, #8, #6,#5,#4#1 and finnally #2. Iceman can be beaten with the Elec Beam, but be warned, this guy is though.
Fireman
Weapon : Flame Wave
Weakness : Ice Slasher
Last of the bosses to face, his stage is varied and interesting, though very frustrating... don't fall in the lava! The Ice Slasher is very useful as it can be used to freeze the fire colums that spring thoughout the stage. Fireman shoots firewalls that you have to jump over; finish him off with the Ice Slasher.

Doctor Wily Stage

Stage One

Boss : Cyclops
Weakness : Elecbeam + Electrik

Big Eyes in the beginning are a hassle; just freeze them up with the Ice Slasher, and walk under them. Later on, you will have to climb up a section using the Magnet Beam. If you run out of energy, just climb down and pick up some of the energy capsules down the stairs. Cyclops is one the strongest monsters throughout this game; thoughest that is, without the electrik! Just fire off an Elec Beam at his eye. Repeatedly hit the select button; the beam will slowly pass through his eye, scoring a hit each time.
Stage two

Boss : Mega Clone
Weakness : Plasma Gun

This stage has MegaMan walking on ledges, pursued by the Green Bladers. As before, shoot them before they get too close. You will then have to face Cutman & Elecman, which are vulnerable to the same weapons as before. The stage concludes as you face Mega Clone; shoot him down with the arm cannon for the win.
Stage Three

Boss : Bubble Machine

Weakness :Guts power, Elecbeam,
Firebeam

A pretty uneventful stage, exept for the Turbo Tunnel; Just fire constantly at the killer bullets, you shouldn't have too many problems. The stage guardian this time is Bubble Machine. Throw the rocks who just HAPPEN to be lying around, and finish him off with the Plasma Cannon.
Final Stage

Boss : Dr. Wily
Weakness :Elecbeam +
Electrik

Though it was over with Gutsman flippers, dinn't you? Well, the Flippers are back! You'll then have to face Bombman, Fireman, Kenny (oops..Iceman), and Gutsman. Just when you finish them off, Dr. Wily is waiting for you. Shoot him down using the Electrick; makes it a bit anti-climax for Dr. Wily to be so easy, but don't worry, he'll be back for more in the next 10 game or so games :).
